MilliporeSigma ups single-use mixer volume to 3,000L

The latest Mobius Power MIX model launched at Interphex in New York this week includes two 500L stainless steel ring extensions, increasing volume to 2,500L and 3,000L.

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany (MilliporeSigma in North America) last year launched a 2,000L mixer, which features a strong vortex to pull the powder down, sweep it back up, and mix the solution more quickly, Jason Mccarthy, head of single-use sales development in the Americas, told us at the show.

“It was very successful, but customers want more almost immediately,” ​he told us.

In order to add more volume, the firm decided to add extensions to increase the height of the bag by 500L.

“In order to reduce the amount of time, effort and energy it takes to develop and launch a product, we decided to keep it simple,” ​he told us.

2,000L match​

Mccarthy said the mixer pairs well with a 2,000L bioreactor. “When you’re done with a 2,000L bioreactor, you have to put more than 2,000L into the next step,” ​he ​explained, adding “as your volumes increase, you require more than 2,000L.” ​  ​

The firm also launched its Pellicon Capsule with Ultracel Membrane tangential flow filtration device and Millipak Final Fill Filter for high-value, small-volume processing at the show.
